Frequently Asked Questions

What is a knuckle boom crane?

A knuckle boom crane, (also known as an articulating crane), is a category of truck-mounted equipment used for lifting heavy loads. Knuckle boom cranes are designed to be lightweight and highly maneuverable while still handling heavy loads.

What is a knuckle boom loader?

A knuckle boom loader is a separate category of truck-mounted equipment specifically designed for material handling and loading. For example, loading logs into trucks, loading recycling materials, etc. The loaders’ hydraulic arms are used to lift the materials, for example lifting the log from the ground and place them inside the truck, or vice versa and lifting the log from the truck back to the ground. There are many types of crane booms, including: telescopic straight-boom, stiff-boom, and articulating boom knuckle-boom. The construction and length of the crane boom determines the crane’s structural reach and capacity.

Do you need a license to drive a Knuckle Boom?

Yes, OSHA 29 CFR part 1926 requires that all knuckle boom crane operations relating to construction and building in any form must be carried out by NCCCO operator certified operators.
