Hiab has in collaboration with VTT designed and implemented the steering system for a self-driving truck that is being tested by Stora Enso in Finland.

The truck  is in operation at Stora Enso’s mill site in Joensuu Uimaharju, Finland. Here, the self-driving test truck moves wood chip cargo from the sawmill to the pulp mill's chip warehouse. The self-driving truck is used to determine how much automated transport can reduce emissions and improve safety, especially in the vicinity of wood chips and warehouses. During the test period a driver will be inside the cab.

“Multiple technologies navigate  the self-driving truck and keep it on track,” says Pauliina Kunvik, Director of R&D, Hiab Demountables. “Our solutions will be increasingly smarter and automated in the future to meet our customers requirements. This is an excellent example of Hiab’s capabilities in the automation field.”

Hiab is a leader in automation solutions in the truck equipment industry. Less than a year ago, Hiab launched HiVision for MULTILIFT hooklifts that can detect containers and with the push of a button select guidance to reverse and lift the desired container for the driver.  Hiab’s SAF (Semi Automatic Folding) and CTC (Crane Tip Control) are some of the solutions Hiab offers to let even novice operators control a crane like seasoned veterans.
