Traditionally, this industry is male-dominated. Customers who drive trucks equipped with loader cranes or other load handling equipment are usually male, and this gender divide is also reflected in organisation. But things are changing, says Charlotte Sellén, R & D Manager at Structural Calculations, who has been working in Hiab‘s Hudiksvall office in Sweden for two years with a background in technical design.
"When I studied civil engineering, half of the class was female, and we have now seen that our customers' daughters are increasingly taking over family-owned businesses. We want to respond to the changing workforce and attract more women to seek us out,” Charlotte continues.
“It was challenging, taking on a leadership role with young kids at home, but I decided to give it a try and never regretted that decision.”
“I feel incredibly happy, having received the unwavering support of my managers, and that we have in-house mentoring programs and leadership development courses. The company has been very understanding of my male colleagues and I who have young kids at home, and many of us work part-time.”
Hiab delivers equipment, intelligent services and digital solutions for on-road load handling including, among other things, loader cranes, forestry cranes and hooklifts.

Hiab was recently awarded the KWF-Vision Award for its HiVision™ system, which allows a driver to use VR glasses and cameras to operate a crane- providing full control of the load without having to leave the cabin. Another new feature is a battery-powered crane that allows for quiet operation of the system. These features open the door to greater efficiency because, for example, one can operate equipment within an urban environment at night time without disturbing the residents.
"We have incredibly strong development opportunities, and globally, we are working on a wide range of job opportunities across industries. There is already a great deal of diversity within the company, but we now want to open the door to welcome even more female talent,” says Charlotte.
